What is Really in a Self Storage Building?
![]() |
Have you ever driven by those ubiquitous rows of storage buildings and wondered what in the world is really inside those little rooms? Have you ever looked at the storage buildings and thought who is putting what in those rooms? Maybe I am just super inquisitive or simply nosey, but I often ride by these storage buildings and ponder over the contents of them. After allowing my imagination to run wild and doing a little research, I have come up with some interesting answers to my questions.
First and most boring is that some of those storage rooms contain people's furniture and possessions while said people wait to move into a new home. After selling their own homes, these people move into apartments as they wait for their new homes to be built. They take a bare minimum of their possessions into the apartment and leave the rest in a storage building.
Their contractors have told them that their new homes will be done very quickly so these new apartment dwellers rent a storage building with the hope that they will be moving into a new lovely home in a month or two. Six months later with no deadlines being met, these now angry apartment dwellers look longingly at their storage building for the possessions they can no longer do without. They might even visit their storage building to retrieve a memento or two. Finally, when their new home is built, they go to their precious storage building that contains their sorely missed possessions and move into their new home never to visit the storage building again.
Another type person who rents a storage building is someone who is getting a divorce. When the wife throws the bum out, he rents a storage building for all of the possessions the wife has thrown into the yard. He can only afford a small motel room so he rents the storage building for the rest of his possessions. If things get bad enough, he might even consider sleeping in his new storage room. Bet that happens more often than you would imagine.
Another scenario is that people rent storage buildings because they are pack rats. They simply cannot give their precious belongings away because they might need them some day. Better to spend money on a storage building for that old sofa and chair you just replaced with a new one. Their kids are only toddlers, but some day they will need the furniture for their first apartment. Think of all the money we will save says the husband as his looks at the storage room. When little Bobby is 18 and ready for college in fifteen years, this stuff will be perfect for him. We won't have to buy anything for him. Then little Lucy can use these things when it is her turn to go to school. Now as we all know, they will spend more than ten times the worth of the possessions on rent for the storage building but try telling that to a true pack rat.
I have heard that some people, mostly teenagers, rent storage buildings for their secret parties. They wait until night to bring their stereo systems and party all night. They don't have neighbors to complain because they are surrounded by nothing but row after row of little buildings. I have never seen this kind of activity myself but it does make sense. No one prowls around storage buildings at night unless they are up to no good themselves; therefore, no one will tell or call the police. The little storage building becomes party central and no one is the wiser.
Another use of storage buildings is for hiding possessions. Suppose you plan to get a divorce and have certain items you don't want to share. You might, if you are sneaky, put those precious belongings in a storage building and hope no one notices. Give me a break; when a divorce looms, each partner knows what the other has down to the last knife or fork. You might put what is yours in that storage building, but mark my words, your spouse will fight you for half of your stuff whether she/he wants it or not. In a divorce junk becomes gold plated so don't waste your time or money renting the storage building.
Self storage buildings are actually quite boring after all. They are just little rooms to store belongings. Like Al Capone's vault, they are empty until you fill them up so the next time you drive by a storage building, don't waste your time wondering what's inside. The stuff inside probably isn't worth your effort. On the other hand, one person's junk is another person's treasure. Many ebay power sellers find great bargains when self storage renters fail to pay and the contents of their storage bins are auctioned off. Maybe the next time I see a self storage business selling the contents of unclaimed storage rooms, I'll stop and see if I see any treasure or just junk. You never know.
