Tips for Organizing Self Storage Units

Self storage units are buildings where customers can store the things they are not using or do not have room for. You'll find these storage buildings all over the place -- most cities and towns will have at least one company offering this service. Normally, you will be charged a monthly fee for the use of a unit, although sometimes you may be able to pay annually as well. The price you can expect to pay will depend on where you are in the country, as well as the size of your storage unit. Once you've obtained your unit and received your key, it's time to start moving things in. Here are some tips for efficient self storage use.

Pack as many items as you can into sealed boxes. This is because items left unboxed in a storage unit can quickly accumulate a great deal of dust. Cardboard is a cost efficient choice. If you do go with cardboard boxes, label each box clearly with a permanent marker so you'll know what's inside. An alternative to cardboard is the use of clear plastic totes with lids. While such totes are more expensive than cardboard boxes, they're also more durable and you can clearly see the contents. For items that simply will not fit into a box or tote, a protective tarp or plastic sheet can do the trick.

When packing your boxes or totes, make sure you don't make them too heavy. Not only can heavy cardboard boxes break, overfilled totes or boxes can be impossible to carry. Try to pack similar items together to make things easier when unpacking. When packing breakable items, utilize packing peanuts or bubble wrap to prevent damage and clearly label the boxes as fragile. If you stack boxes on top of each other, always put the heaviest on the bottom and the lightest on top.

Finally, it's a good idea to load the largest items into self storage units first, then bring in the smaller ones. If you're storing wood furniture, treat it with furniture polish before covering it to add a bit of extra protection. If you are going to be storing items that use fuel, like lawnmowers for example, be sure to empty the gas out before putting the item in the unit. As you'll discover, a bit of planning and organization can go a long way towards efficient storage of all your items and make access to them fast and easy.
