Even if a facility doesn't utilize human security guards, they may have other security such as video surveillance or high powered floodlights. Once you find a suitable self storage company, it's time to take a few measures of your own. Purchase a strong lock, or two, to put on the door of your storage building. Most any home improvement or hardware store will carry a wide selection of locks from which you can choose.

How you pack and store your items can also add to the security of your unit. Your most valuable things should be stored in the back of the unit to make them more difficult for potential thieves to access. Pack everything you can into boxes to not only make storage more efficient but to make reaching valuables more difficult. Simple strategies like these can go a long way towards preventing theft of your valuables.

If you absolutely must go to your storage unit after dark, take someone with you, have a cell phone handy and use a high powered flashlight.
