Self storage facilities are a popular way for people to stash the things they no longer need or have room for but don't want to get rid of. Because self storage is in high demand, it's easy to find facilities in most every city or town, no matter how small. Not only can self storage be convenient for users, it can be lucrative for facility owners. If you have items that you simply don't have the space in your home or office for, read on to learn the basics of using a self storage unit efficiently.

Obtaining a Storage Unit

The first thing you'll need to do is find the most cost efficient storage unit possible. Call around to the various facilities in your area to check prices on different sized units. The next thing you'll need to do is determine how large of a unit you require. Of course, the smaller the unit, the cheaper it will be. While it might seem that you have a lot of items, you'll want to think about how much space they'll take up once they're packed into boxes and totes. Remember, you can stack boxes on top of each other to utilize vertical space. After you choose your unit, you'll pay either a monthly or yearly rental fee and be given a key.

Preparing Your Items

When storing your items in a unit, you should always put them in boxes or totes. This is not only to save space and make moving easier, but to prevent the accumulation of dirt and dust. If you have large items that cannot be boxed, cover them with a tarp or sheet for protection. Dust all your items before placing them in boxes, and pack carefully. For fragile items, always use bubble wrap or foam packing peanuts and label the boxes as breakable. Speaking of labeling the boxes, always clearly write what the boxes contain to make moving and unpacking easy. If you'll be storing vehicles or other items that use gas, it is of vital importance to drain all gas before storing the item.

Organizing Your Storage Unit

An important part of efficient self storage facilities usage is organizing your unit properly. This can be achieved with a bit of common sense and planning. Move your largest things in first, then the smaller items. Place similar items or items that go in the same room close to each other. Stack your totes and boxes on top of each other for maximum space efficiency, but not so high that they'll topple. Make sure you can easily access all the items in your unit, in case you ever need to. A well-organized storage unit can be an asset that makes your life a lot easier!
